Funned

I haven't had anything to eat today. If I had, I'd probably be feeling more worried. The dept. chair stopped me in the hall today to let me know that the funding that has been paying me will, in fact, switch over next year to paying for the new faculty member that was just hired for this fall. See, last year the job search didn't find anyone, which is how I was hired for this one year appointment. Well, this year the search was successful and now my appointment will end. I'm free to apply for another appointment, if more funding is available, or if someone else does not return. Yay me.

I've been trying to come up with some words of wisdom, but no dice. So, in the spirit of camaraderie, a heartfelt "THAT SUCKS!" is the best I can offer ... and hope that something even better comes along for you, or by some miracle they dredge up more funding.

OY! Sorry to hear that!!! That sucks. What does that mean? Are you going to start looking for a different job? How do those prospects look?

It does suck. I've already applied to a few jobs, knowing this might come to pass. And prospects are never good with this sort of thing. I applied to over a hundred before getting this one.

Okay, apply here in Minnesota and I will take you out for really good food. It is horrible news but hopefully it will open the door to something better.

Really sorry to hear this, Paul. Wishing you better luck... and wishing for all of us that "luck" didn't play so strong a role in what passes for our country's education system.

Thanks, Josh. Pass on all the luck you can spare. I'll need it.

Why do bad things happen to the best people? Blah. I guess bad people get even "badder" things, eh? Who wouldn't want to hire you? Geez.

Paul, you better keep me away from that Department Chair when I come to visit. Little old me could do serious damage with how mad am I about this! I hate it.

Well, all is not, as they say, lost. I might be able to get on again, though that means I'm basically back at square one, competing with others. I'm not placing all my eggs in this basket. I've applied to a few jobs and will continue to apply to more. Which is a loathsome process.
