Sill

So I was gone for two months or so. Maybe you noticed. Partly, it was nice to be away, to forget about thinking of new posts. But, in truth, my attention was elsewhere: my book, work, moving to a new place, and so forth. But, that list is incomplete and with the appearance of the feature in the latest issue in Poets & Writers, it seems disingenuous to not mention it here: I got engaged this summer. Recent poems like "Love Song with Ruin" are for her; my next collection of poems will be, I'm guessing, something different altogether from the previous three. I'm fantastically happy and it will be interesting to see what sort of art comes from that.

In the meantime, I don't expect this space to become DishCentral but I did want to share this with you. Thanks for reading, as always.

I knew from scavenging details elsewhere, but it is still at thrill to see it confirmed. = ) Couldn't have happened to a better guy, and at such an exciting time of life; I'm glad she can be along for the ride. Congratulations--

Hooray for joy! Happy art is definitely different art, or it was for me, when I met the Brujo three years ago and lost a source of angst (but gained someone with whom to play etymological games when I can't sleep, as well as a fairly reliable source of crème brulée).

Many happy returns of the day!

Congratulations, Paul. May you have many years of joy together.

And you can tell the grandkids that you are the only couple in the known universe whose relationship was outed by Poets & Writers, those gossips.

I just read your article in P&W. I love your poetry and your description of how the title and first line come to you; it's the same for me. Can't wait to buy your new book.

Discovered you on the pages of Poet and Writers this month - I found the conversation about your desire to get beyond biography or, at least, the use of biography to package your at fascinating. I am far from achieving the success you have reached at this point, but biography looms large in my work as a writer. I am only recently coming to accept that I cannot write without owning my biography, which comes with its share of horror; I suppose a packageable biography if I write well enough - that is crucial. Biography, packaged or not, lends nothing to the work of a poor writer - but a good one? How do you escape it? I look forward to reading your work and plan to purchase it. It sounds like, less than denying your biography in your latest book, you are challenging the stereotypes, the assumptions, that come with it.
I have tried to avoid my own biography at the same time attempting to write. I am finally at a point where I am writing my way through it. It is part and parcel and I can't seem to divorce it from my writing. I think that by owning it, I can integrate it and thus write without it serving as an obstacle. At least I hope so. I am interested in your thoughts on this. Congratulations btw! Best wishes to your new love.

I don't know, Paul... In my experience, marriage is a sucker's game.

I read your interview in P&W yesterday as I sat in my car waiting for someone. Last night I went back to the bookstore and bought My Index...read half of it before bed last night - it is very touching, moving, AMAZING even. I look forward to your memoir and also your first two books of poetry
