Aaarrrr

It's no surprise to me that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest raked in 55 million dollars on Friday alone. I saw it with more than a few audience members who were dressed as pirates or cinched into corsets and bustiers. At Johnny Depp's entrance on screen, the packed theater broke into wild applause. That's a formula for serious bank. As for the movie itself, I thought it was pretty great, having only liked the first one. This one is again too long, but it never really feels like it, better paced for the most part. There are passages that seem like Looney Toons brought to life, which made me smile to no end. Good fun.

I've bought several books of poems lately, Maine, by Jonah Winter; A Defense of Poetry, by Gabriel Gudding; The Captain Lands in Paradise, by Sarah Manguso; The Legend of Light, by Bob Hicok. A couple others.

Bad dreams last night but feeling good.

I love _Maine_. There's a sestina in there that makes me very happy. Of course, many sestinas make me happy. Some make me frowny. I like the energy of the book and stayed up in the wee hours once, reading it.

The Bob sestina is fun. And the cowboy sestina.

Maine & Defense of Poetry are two of my favorite books. Have you ever read Jonah Winter's Texas poems? So funny, your pants will fall off. As for my friend Gabe, look out: he's a beautiful monster.

I've read most of Gabe's book before, just never had my own copy. Figured it was time I corrected that.

Am I the only one who doesn't enjoy Hicok's work? Everyone I know likes the work a lot. What am I missing?

I just got Manguso's Siste Viator and liked it a lot. I don't know Winter's work, so that makes me happy. I'm with Eduardo on Hicok, though. I'm always on the prowl for new poets to read, so who else are people reading and loving?

Huzzah for Sarah Manguso! I'll have to look these others up too.

I disliked the first Pirates of the Caribbean because of all the pretend lovey-dovey business & the 'acting'. This second movie was good because it cut out all of that-- just Johnny Depp and things happening all over the place.
