Q:

I've been enjoying the World Cup, and have for years, but the outrageous flopping by players is hard to take. A player for Costa Rica was just given a yellow card for touching the sleeve of a Poland player. The Poland player, feeling the hand graze him, goes flying, his face contorted in a comic expression of agony. And the referee falls for it. Time and time again. Players fall with what look to be mortal wounds, judging by their reactions, and once the foul is called or not called, they're up again, healed. It's absurd.

But I am loving the games. Soccer was the only sport I was ever good at.

Memoir: 17,056 words. I slowed a bit for a few days toward the end of last week. But I'm back on the horse again. Properly formatted, it comes out to 80 pages. Which is kinda cool.

Memoir question: does anyone know anything about the practice of using fire to heal? Is it some offshoot of Reiki? It's when a flame is lit on the skin, with alcohol, I'm guessing, and a jar is placed over the fire. The fire burns out, creating suction that, I assume, sucks out the sickness/impurity/etc.

Anyone?

Hey Paul. Would it be all right with you if I gave some of your poems to one of my students to read, a very promising young poet? I think she would love your music.

I don't know nearly enough about fire.

Of course. That'd be great, Ali!

about fire: i had a friend who did it--i think it was called "cupping"--she swore by it, and i think so does Gwyneth Paltrow. leaves some scary looking marks, but again, my friend loved it. i think you can google it.

Paul, I practice Reiki (L3) but have never heard of "fire cupping" as a related practice. Generally speaking, Reiki does not attempt to "draw out" bad stuff; instead, it opens a path for good stuff to enter.

its called cupping...we had a demo on it and other alternative/traditional/complementary medicines my 4th year of med school...its based on sucking out evil spirits and/or humors...its fairly interesting but all hogwash from a medical standpoint

Did you see Korea play France. The last ten minutes were incredible. Prior to the last 10 mins, Korea seemed far too deferential to France.

Missed it, damnit.

It's definitely not reiki, at least not the reiki I had exposure to.

I saw cupping on TV; but they were also doing moxibustion. I love that word. Moxibustion. That's some fiery healing

Cupping is a common practice specific to acupuncture/Chinese medicine. It leaves marks like severe bruising which eventually go away. Moxabustion is the practice of lighting threads of moxa, or mugwort, on the skin.

It's used in a lot of indigenous healing practices. That's all I know. Especially Mexican and Central American.
