Thirteen

I never listen to any of the recordings I've made for places like Slate or the poems I did for Fishouse. I can't stand how I sound. But last night, I thought, what the heck, I'll see what I sound like.

And of course I sound fourteen.

Oh, Paul. You don't sound 14. I made a CD of poetry recordings from one of my friends and included your poem "Water" on it. She loves it. We all do.

Fourteen AND pimply-faced.

Agh!

Yeah ... your voice and the voice in the poem sound different...

Your recorded voice sounds identical to mine on tape / I always felt younger than my age. 14, hmm?

I don't think you sound 14 at all. The recordings sounded great to me. But of course, I don't think we ever sound exactly like our recordings and no one ever likes the sound of their recorded voice. For example, I think that I really sound 14. And as if I'm mysteriously congested. I find it pretty demoralizing, actually.

It is demoralizing! Which is why I never listen.

But, really, I protest too much. I'm just having fun with this, poking fun at myself.

You sound better in person.
